Thanks for your comment Chris and welcome into the MTB league! :-D
As a matter of fact, my knees felt to be hurting even more as I first started with cycling. But they rapidly got better after 3-4 weeks of cycling (probably some 30-50 hours of cycling). Now the cracking is gone and I am already looking forward to the 2010 season!!

I had knee problems from a long history of backcountry skiing and snowboarding accidents in my "youth." I ignored all the signs of "could have serious" knee problem signals like the "cracking" sound in my knee joints whenever I made large motions (like benting knee completely and then straightening it). Then one day when I was mountaineering, my knees just couldn't handle the stress and the pain in my knees forced me to chugged bottle of Advil pills just to get back to base camp. After that, a few years went by and I was bit depressed that I couldn't do any of the sports I loved to do. Then, a friend of mine told me that I should try cycling because it isn't too hard on-the-knees. Well at he suggested I try swimming, but I'm a terrible swimmer and would drown before I reached the other side of the 25-yd length pool. So I went for cycling. It all looked nice, but I my knees still hurt after cycling for about an hour or so. Then, I did a bike fit. It wasn't cheap, and it took 2 days for it to complete. Since then I can cycling for 8 hours with minimal knee pain. It is amazing. If you can't swim like me and have knee problems, cycling is the way to go.

Now I just need to sell all of my ski/snowboard and mountaineering gear so that I can upgrade my bike components. :-D
